Design Your Own Look
Whether you love bold color, soft pastels, or something in between, this is your chance to get creative! Our shop sample is inspired by Quilting by Elisa’s Tula Pink Greyworks version, featuring a striking mix of rainbow tones and black-to-white gradients—but your coat can be anything you imagine.
The sample showcases all of the foundation paper piecing designs, but you don’t have to go that far if you prefer a simpler look. Even adding a decorative sleeve or a single feature panel can beautifully personalize your jacket.
We have a wide variety of new fabrics in the shop to help you create the perfect color palette for your coat. Our sample features 12 rainbow colors paired with 5 gradients from black to white for a bold, dramatic look.
You can absolutely simplify your design if you prefer—just a fat quarter of each fabric is enough to get started, making this project flexible for any style or skill level.
Preparations Prior to Class
**Note - I did not prewash the fabrics I used in the paper piecing components, but I did prewash the lining and 2 fabrics for
the coat prior to construction as recommended. If you choose to prewash all of your fabrics, please do so prior to class.
I would recommend a light spray of starch and a good ironing as well.
Please review the Expansion Pack Pattern and determine which designs you would like to focus your energy on.
Bring with you enough copies of the pattern pieces of your choice on foundation paper to class so we can get
started on the piecing portion without delay.
Supplies Needed
Variety of Fabrics (Requirements vary on chosen designs)
Sewing machine in good working condition
Bella Coat Expansion pack/packs patterns (required)
Carol Doaks foundation paper (Printed with your patterns prior to class arrival)
Thread
Glue stick
Scissors and rotary cutter (28-45 mm preferred)
A mini cutting mat (or you can use one of our large ones)
Mini iron and wool mat (recommended)
Add a quarter ruler
Extension table if you have one
